Get Your House Ready for Winter and Enjoy Stress Free Holidays
Winter is coming and you are wondering if you remembered to go through everything on your winter home maintenance to do list. The following are a few tasks you shouldn’t forget.
Check your attic
If the insulation of your house is done properly your attic should be cold. The heat from your house should not reach you attic. If this is the case then snow will keep melting and refreezing. The ice dams caused by excessive melting can lead to water dripping through your roof and on your exterior walls and cause damage.
Clean Your Chimney
Your chimney should be cleaned and ready for the winter season. Hire a professional chimney sweepe to remove all charred debris accumulated in your chimney. If it is not cleaned properly, your chimney can start a fire in your home. This happens when the debris in the chimney catch fire from the heat of your fireplace or wood stove. If you never light your fireplace, make sure to seal the flue, so the cold air cannot enter your house.
As cozy as it is by the fire, winter is when, most house fires happen. Make sure to do a checkup of all your fire safety features. Test all smoke alarms and change their batteries. Having a carbon monoxide is also a must, so if you don’t have one, now is the time to get it.
Prepare Your Septic Tank
If your home is not connected to the municipal sewage system, preparing your septic tank should be on your winter home maintenance to do list. You need to protect your septic tank from freezing in cold temperatures. Usually snow can act as insulator, but you can not rely on having a permanent snow cover. Another alternative is buying a septic tank blanket. Another good option is covering your septic tank with plants.
